Called a fake 800 # from a "IRS" letter 4883C. They called back on this 304 #. It is an old disconnected IRS line that someone was able to reactivate. The people who think this is not a scam are guilty of false hope. The 800 # traces to 8 people (not IRS). Lock or keep an eye on your credit and financial info. I locked my credit.
I called Taxpayer advocate number 877-777-4778 from Turbo Tax help desk. I called, they transferred me to IRS and said that will call me back in 30-60 mins with 304 area code. I did get call back from 304-707-9490. Sounded legitimate. I provided my info. However, the lady (1003526472) put me on hold several times when she looked for info. After a while I lost the connection. I am scared that she was scam and just looked up this 304 number. I saw many complaints. I wish I did not answer any questions and did not give any my information. What can I do at this point. Please help.
I received a letter (Number 4883C) from the IRS. The letter looked official. I called the number from the letter (800-830-5084), but I was on hold for a while and told that they were to busy to take my call. It was recommended that I get on ID.me to enter my ID information, which I did, but I got this message: Please call the Taxpayer Protection Program at 1-800-830-5084 for further assistance, which I did. When I got through, a women named Ms. Thrash answered. It took a couple of minutes for her to understand what I was calling for. When she asked me for my SS#, I felt uncomfortable and I told her so. She, then, suggested that I visit the local SS office. She said she could make an appointment for me in Salisbury, MD, which she did. Well, I'll find out on January 12 if this is legitimate. I didn't give her any info, but I sure put a lot of my information on ID.me, which looks OK, but I'm not sure! I uploaded both sides of my DL, a video of myself and my SS#. I'll keep my fingers crossed that all is well. By the way I went on-line and discovered that my 2020 return was never processed (I used TurboTax and sent in by mail). Also, I owed 0$ to the IRS and they owed Me 0$.)
It's not a scam. I requested a call back from the IRS. IRS even says to expect a callback from this area code (304 WVa).
Received at call at 3am EST from this number +1 (304) 707-9490 claiming to be IRS returning a call. So frustrating.
I'll know for sure if I get a call from another number claiming to be the IRS, but I received a call back that I scheduled from this number and I believe the woman I just spoke to was in fact an IRS worker.
I believe this number is a scam, ms Bowen hung up on me after she took my information.
