I also checked met life website and the number is there. It is nevertheless unnerving to receive calls from a third party, which they use. https://www.metlife.com/fraud/report-fraud/

Looks real "It is FRAUD" Received a bill from "MetLife" stating to pay $168.10 on a Policy number that has been paid off in full for 5 years. If not paid by date policy will be cancelled. Phone number for customer service 1-833-642-1007 when I called it said thank you for calling Roadrunner Pharmacy right before 8:00am, called same number after 8:00 it then thanked me for calling MetLife and the automated voice asked for social security number to proceed. Representative Massmutal BE Thomas Albano. I contacted MetLife with a legitimate phone number and found that this is definitely a SCAM/FRAUD!!!
This is not necessarily a scam. Last year, about two years after our mother passed away, my family received unexpected letters from MetLife asking each of us to submit insurance claims. We were very suspicious, because we were not aware of any policy our mother had had with MetLife, and because a web search did not find the number 833-642-1007 listed on any MetLife site. However just to make sure, I contacted MetLife via their web site (Support --> Contact us --> Metropolitan Tower Life Insurance), and was informed that the letters and phone number were legitimate. Three months later my siblings and I had each cashed checks for over $500, for a policy our mother had taken out in the early 1960s. As I remember we were never asked for anything more sensitive than our social security numbers and a copy of the death certificate (which we had to mail to an address in Troy, Michigan). If this was a scam, they payed a lot of money for our SSNs! However I'll note that we didn't receive calls from this number; what we received were very official looking letters saying we could call that number for information. Scammers would never send out letters like that; it would be way too much trouble and expense. However scammers might spoof a legitimate number and call you to fish for information, so to be safe you should check with MetLife directly to make sure the policy in question really exists.
This number was on a MetLife Claim I got for my Dad who passed 12 years ago with the wrong date of death on it. I became suspicious when they didn't have any other info, such as soc sec. Called the number and the guy sounded like he was outside and then said he was going to check the policy info and never came back to the phone....The letter wants you to fill out all the info on the beneficiaries, DON"T DO IT!!! TOTAL SCAM!!
Got a letter in the mail on May 11, 2020. Letter looked official. Wanted me to pay $39.03 for 20 payments. It had a p.o. Box to mail bill to and asked check to be mailed to Metlife. I am assuming they will take my banking and routing# off the check and try to steal funds.
Received Privacy Policy. letter with MetLife logo with my name, address and a policy number on May 4,2020.. Called their customer service number.and was asked for my social security number. Was put on hold for next available agent. Left holding. No one picked up. THIS IS A SCAM
Ditto... No return envelope for the forms so the phone number teaser is all they're really going for...
METLIFE SCAM 10-4-19 Rec'd form letter in the mail, real official looking, from “Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.” Claiming this is a 2nd notification (doubtful). They want all the info on the deceased. This name should be either Jr., suffix or the III (3rd), again, no suffix indicated. Dad died 20 yrs ago and same named Brother died 5 yrs. ago . They have name and no further indicators for identity of the deceased. Referenced ph # 1-833-642-1007 to call them (We're here to help). They had my full name and nothing additional but my carpark address. Letter was addressed to my real estate property ---my parking space I.D.----(under my condo bldg.). Not my condo unit, which is a different property number. "On behalf of MetLife, please accept our sincere condolences during this difficult time."
